Okay, so while I think the research experiment about the benefits of different types of storytelling would be very interesting, I think I've found my definite topic.
One of my internships right now is working with Central Carolina Community Foundation on their Literacy 2030 coalition/initiative. They've hired me to conduct an economic impact study to determine to return on investment for increased literacy. I'll be looking at the benefits from a variety of angles: crime, healthcare, business, government services, etc. And in addition to the "hard" benefits such as increased spending and other quantitative factors, I'll also be seeking out evidence of "soft" benefits through personal statements about how people's lives have changed for the better when they increase their literacy skills (qualitative).
I imagine I'll do a lot of statistics research by looking at organizations such as the National Center for Education Statistics and Census data. But the social research will really come in with surveys, questionnaires and focus groups in order to gather information not just on a general, national scale, but with specific emphasis on South Carolina, and the 11 midlands counties who are currently participation in the Literacy 2030 coalition.
